Manchester United fell to yet another defeat on Boxing Day, losing 2-0 to relegation-threatened Wolves, with United now possibly entering the relegation battle themselves.

During the first half, both sides were combative, looking to gain control of the match. While United looked steady in possession, they struggled to carve out any openings, while Andre Onana was tested on a number of occasions.

The second half was a nightmare for United. Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a yellow card just two minutes after the break, and the game was an uphill battle from there. Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner, the second time United have conceded from such a set-piece in a week. Hwang Hee-chan sealed the win for Wolves in stoppage time as United pushed in search of an equaliser.

Here is how the United players fared:

Andre Onana: 4 Onana made a number of saves in the first half and in the opening 45 minutes he looked very steady and comfortable. However, he produced another horror show in the second half, letting in a corner after not being strong enough aerially.

Leny Yoro: 5 He looked comfortable on the ball and was fighting off much of the danger offered by Rayan Ait-Nouri. While he was booked very early on, he handled himself well, but like many of the United defenders, was caught ball-watching for Cunha's corner. Substituted in the second half.

Harry Maguire: 6 Probably one of the few United players who looked up to it and was matching Wolves' physicality. Looking to be one of the best in a bad bunch right now.

Lisandro Martinez: 6 Looked relatively solid throughout the match, keeping Goncalo Guedes quiet, and apart from some rare moments, was also remaining tight on Nelson Semedo and Matt Doherty when they made strides forward.

Noussair Mazraoui: 6 He was back at wing-back again, and he looked good once again. Him and Amad linked up well down the right, and he should have had an assist early on, but none of United's forwards could make contact with his ball. Had to move into the back three in the second half.

Diogo Dalot: 5

From the start it was clear that most of United's opportunities would come down his side, with the team constantly looking for him as he had the better of Semedo and Doherty. While he had an opportunity saved by Jose Sa, he was underwhelming with his crossing and was caught ball-watching on some occasions. Looks like he needs a rest.

Manuel Ugarte: 7

United's best player by a mile. Fought for every ball and he seemed to win most of his duels, as he has done over recent weeks. The unfortunate news is that he picked up a booking that could have been avoided, and he will now be suspended for the Newcastle United game.

Kobbie Mainoo: 4

Given the heights of last season's trip to Molineux, Mainoo was a complete shadow of that. Made a number of uncharacteristically poor passes, especially towards Rasmus Hojlund, leaving the forward frustrated. Made some good inroads forward in the first half, but faded out as Wolves pushed on.

Amad: 5 He was constantly hugging the touchline and was looking to take on Toti and Ait-Nouri. While he made some successful dribbles, he was kept relatively quiet and could not break the defence down.

Bruno Fernandes: 2 A rash decision that arguably ended up costing United the game. He was booked very early on, and he then needlessly fouled Semedo very early in the second half to earn a second yellow card. A horrible performance from the captain when United needed him most.

Rasmus Hojlund: 5 Starved of any sort of service yet again and was visibly frustrated with the lack of balls being played into him. He linked up well when he did receive the ball, but ended up being a bystander when United were down to 10 men. Won plenty of fouls, but not much else.

Substitutions

Antony: 6 Came on in the 63rd minute and genuinely looked like one of United's better players going forward. Showed some spirit, and came close to equalising from long range.

Casemiro: 5

Came on to solidify the midfield and inject some experience. Could not rescue United with his magical headers this time.

Christian Eriksen: 5

Calmed the game down, but struggled to have an impact.

Alejandro Garnacho: 5

Injected some pace into the team, but could not make a telling difference.

Joshua Zirkzee: 5

Did not have much of a chance on the ball. Pressed well.

Manager - Ruben Amorim: 6

Realistically, he put out the best team he has available, and in the first half, we looked good on the ball. He was once again let down by errors and rash decisions, especially by his own captain. Needs to be backed in January before it is too late and the fans start getting on his back.

Up next? Newcastle. Does not get any easier does it...
