Manchester United dropped down to 15th after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham on Sunday, after James Maddison's first-half goal.

Prior to the game, United had been dealt a number of injury blows, with the likes of Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo being out for the foreseeable future, while Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer suffered knocks in training. Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro were also ill and unavailable for the match.

This left Ruben Amorim with 12 senior playes in the squad, and aside from Victor Lindelof, the bench was filled with players from the academy.

While Amorim would have wanted his senior players to step up and show their quality, this was not the case, as United lacked any real cutting edge in front of goal, missing a number of huge opportunities, with many falling to Alejandro Garnacho.

Maddison's goal came after Lucas Bergvall's shot was parried into the path of the English midfielder by Andre Onana, with Maddison tapping the ball into the net from the rebound.

United threatened on many occasions, yet the lack of urgency and quality highlight the struggles that Amorim's side has faced this season.

Here are our player ratings:

Andre Onana 5

He got down quickly for Bergvall's shot but arguably could have palmed it away further from goal for Maddison's winner. Dealt with most of the other shots that Tottenham took, but almost presented Spurs with an opportunity for a second after throwing the ball loosely to Patrick Dorgu.

Noussair Mazraoui 6

Probably the best of United's back three on the day. Had to cover plenty of ground and make a number of recovery tackles especially when faced with Djed Spence.

Harry Maguire 5

He was caught ball-watching for Maddison's goal, and was finding it difficult to handle Spurs' pace on the counter. Not the best of games from him.

Matthijs de Ligt 5

Did not look completely comfortable and like Maguire, failed to track Maddison's run for the goal. Gave away a corner in a silly manner at one point, highlighting his nervousness when he had Dejan Kulusevski running towards him.

Diogo Dalot 5

He did not look capable of handling Son Heung-min and was struggling to get crosses into the box. While he was one of the few players who had the pace to go forward, he did not do much with the ball.

Casemiro 3

Made his first Premier League start since the horror show against Newcastle back in December, and it showed. He never seemed to be capable of keeping up with the game's intensity and was caught out on the ball on numerous occasions. Sloppy, did not offer much at both ends, and the Tottenham midfield was running rings around him. He was the only player to be subbed off.

Bruno Fernandes 5

One of the few players who seemed likely to create an opportunity. Sent Garnacho through on goal in the first-half, yet the Argentine failed to convert the chance. He struggled with Casemiro and was constantly having to cover extra ground. A difficult night for the United captain, on a day when the Reds needed him to step up.

Patrick Dorgu 6

Probably one of the few positives for United today. He constantly tried to make inroads into the Tottenham defence and threatened with his pace on a number of occasions. However, while he made so many runs, he was barely found by the other United players.

Joshua Zirkzee 6

The standout player in United's attack on the day, getting United out of defence quickly with some neat touches on the counter. Got past plenty of Spurs players but the others seemed to slow the game down. He did seem to tire and was jogging back on so many occasions, and his influence faded.

Alejandro Garnacho 4

Threatening and seemed likely he would be the one to get United a goal, yet he squandered so many chances for United, particularly one in the first-half that he skied over the bar from close range. This performance was symbolic of his senior career. Flashes of brilliance, and others that are completely frustrating. Really needs to improve his finishing.

Rasmus Hojlund 5

He looked much better than he has done in previous weeks, yet it is another game without a goal for the Dane. Started very well, making runs in behind the Spurs defence, yet just like the other forwards, his influence faded as the game wore on.

Substitutions

Chido Obi 5

Frustrating to see him come on so late in the game for his debut, practically giving him no chance to get a touch on the ball, let alone an opportunity to stamp his authority. Should have come on at least 10 minutes before to possibly make a difference.

Manager - Ruben Amorim: 4

The injuries to key players and the repeated missed chances in front of goal have not helped him, and he is coming across as a very frustrated figure on the touchline, and rightly so. However, the decision to not bring on any of the youngsters earlier in the game to possibly make a difference was mind boggling, especially with Casemiro struggling so much.

As it stands, with United in 15th, Amorim badly needs an improvement in the Premier League, or his days as United manager could well and truly be numbered with INEOS at the helm.
