Manchester United suffered their first Premier League defeat since February after losing 1-0 away to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Anthony Elanga opened the scoring five minutes into the game against his former club, making an impressive run from inside his own half after a United corner was cleared by the Forest defence.
United dominated for large parts of the game, controlling the play and stringing a couple of neat passes together. However, for all their dominance, United were struggling to carve many opportunities, with a header from Diogo Dalot that struck the bar being the main one of note in the first-half.
The second-half continued lie the first, with United having more of the ball but finding it difficult in the final third, with a number of loose passes and ambitious shots leading to moves breaking down.
United could have got their equaliser with the last kick of the game, with Harry Maguire, who had come on as a makeshift striker, looking like he was about to force the ball over the line. That was until Murillo somehow got back to clear the ball from off the line and maintain Forest's clean sheet.
As a result, United suffered their 13th Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them momentarily in 13th, with Tottenham and Everton having games in hand.
Therefore, here are our player ratings from tonight's defeat:
Andre Onana 6
Had no chance for the Elanga goal, and aside from that, had a relatively quiet night. Tried to spur United on and encourage them to attack with some quick releases, and made a brilliant save from a shot that was offside.
Leny Yoro 7
United's best defender on the night, with him oozing confidence on the ball. Probably the only player who managed to keep up with Elanga's pace, and completed a stunning sliding tackle late in the match.
Matthijs de Ligt 7
Won most of his aerial duels and looked commanding without the ball. Struggled at times with Elanga's pace, but kept Taiwo Awoniyi very quiet.
Noussair Mazraoui 6
Failed to close down Elanga for the goal, and at times was beaten for pace during the game. Looked great on the ball and assured emerging from the defence.
Diogo Dalot 7
Constantly got on the ball and was looking to create something out of nothing for United. He was very often being left all alone on the right with most of the other players looking to flood the penalty area, and he time and time again got the better of the opposing full-back. His end product yet again let him down, but a tidy display from the Portuguese international.
Manuel Ugarte 5
Busy as ever in midfield as he tried to deny Forest any space. Hooked off at half-time as Ruben Amorim looked to push United forward n the second-half.
Casemiro 6
While the game was beyond him at times, he made some excellent recovery challenges, especially on Elanga at one point. Lost his head in the second-half after some subject decisions from the referee. Subbed off.
Patrick Dorgu 4
Did not keep up with Elanga as he was running into United's midfield, and when he had an opportunity to make a challenge, failed to do so. While he looked to attack Forest's right-hand side, he was often very loose with his passing and did not offer much.
Bruno Fernandes 6
United's main source of goals and creativity, and it looked like it throughout the game. Everything United did went through him, but he could not add to his impressive tally on the night. Lost his head as well in the first-half after Ryan Yates went down easily. Dropped back to midfield for the second-half, but his influence dwindled.
Alejandro Garnacho 4
Wasteful and frustrating, the two words to sum up Garnacho's performance on the night. Repeatedly tried to create something, but often got dispossessed or the chance came to nothing. Lost the ball a lot in the second-half and was constantly shooting from distance. Booked for kicking the ball away.
Joshua Zirkzee 5
Started as a striker and it was immediately clear that he is much more effective as one of the attacking midfielders. Zirkzee failed to influence the game, neither as a striker or when he dropped back in the second-half.
Substitutions
Rasmus Hojlund 6
Came out for the second-half with a point to prove, and he looked very lively throughout the 45 minutes. Made a number of good runs, held the ball up well, and even had a few attempts on goal.
Christian Eriksen 5
Brought on after Casemiro was booked, and the Dane failed to have any real impact, often slowing the game down and picking the wrong pass.
Mason Mount 6
Substituted on in the hopes of inspiring a comeback, and he came very close to doing so, after having a shot go just wide of the post.
Harry Maguire 5
Brought on as an auxiliary striker, and his presence was immediately felt. He had a big chance late on yet it was cleared from off the, and he had a header from close range go way wide of the goal.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 5
Amorim looks like he got the team selection all wrong tonight.
While United played some of their best football on the day, with several neat moves, especially in midfield, out of possession there were real issues. Casemiro failed to handle the rapid Forest midfield, while Zirkzee was practically anonymous. Probably should have dropped Zirkzee down to attacking midfield, pushed Hojlund forward, and started Fernandes in midfield.
All in all, an encouraging display, yet one that leaves us frustrated having gone another game without gaining any points.
