Manchester United fell to a shambolic 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United after a horrendous second-half display at St James' Park on Sunday.
United came into the game with one eye on Thursday, knowing that they just need to get this game out of the way to prepare for the Lyon match. Much was made about Andre Onana being dropped, making way for Altay Bayindir's Premier League debut, yet the Turkish goalkeeper did not cover himself in any glory.
Newcastle struck first after Alexander Isak set up Sandro Tonali who fired the hosts in front with a brilliant strike on the half-volley.
However, United responded with a brilliant counter-attack that saw Diogo Dalot run into the Newcastle half before passing it to Alejandro Garnacho, who calmly stroked it into the net for an equaliser.
Newcastle came to life after the restart, and Harvey Barnes got a quickfire double to make it 3-1 in a flash, with Noussair Mazraoui being at fault for the third goal. Bayindir tried a pass into midfield that was easily intercepted by the Newcastle midfield, before Bruno Guimaraes made it four to complete the win for the Magpies.
Here is how the United players fared:
Altay Bayindir 4
Ushered into the team after Onana's horrorshow in Lyon, yet he did not produce anything to change Ruben Amorim's mind in terms of selection on Thursday. He made a good save to deny Isak, but he produced a very weak pass that Newcastle profited from for the fourth goal.
Noussair Mazraoui 5
He was pretty solid in the first-half, often covering for Dalot. However, he made a rare mistake in the second-half, slipping to give the ball to Barnes who made it 3-1. Other than that, was quite his usual self.
Victor Lindelof 5
Not always comfortable with his passing, but did well to handle Isak throughout the game. His main issues was closing down the other runners, particularly Barnes, who was left to run through the United defence for the game-sealing third Newcastle goal.
Leny Yoro 6
Probably United's best of the back three on the day. While he could have done better for the second Barnes goal, he was relatively assured in his defending aside from that instance. Solid with his distribution, and helped guide Harry Amass down the left. Will surely start on Thursday.
Diogo Dalot 5
A game of highs and lows for Dalot. Provided an excellent assist for Garnacho, making a brilliant run and drifted past the Newcastle midfield. However, he was also very easily beaten by Barnes for the second Newcastle goal, and struggled to hit his stride again afterwards.
Manuel Ugarte 4
Put himself about like usual, and held on to the ball well on a number of occasions, particularly for the United goal. However, he was constantly putting United in trouble with his passing, and struggled to deal with Tonali, Joelinton and Guimaraes.
Christian Eriksen 4
He was way off the pace throughout the whole match, being no match with Newcastle's rapid midfield. Clearly not got the legs anymore to play at the heart of midfield.
Harry Amass 6
Looked like a good fit despite his young age, and was constantly putting himself about and going strongly into challenges. Made a good account of himself and will probably feature more in the last few weeks.
Alejandro Garnacho 6
United's main threat going forward, and he took his goal excellently, showing an uncharacteristic composure in front of goal. Taken off to be fully fit for Thursday.
Bruno Fernandes 6
The chief creator for United again, but was forced back by the Newcastle midfield. Constantly endeavoured in the hopes of making things tick for United, but his teammates were clearly off it. Rested for the final few minutes.
Joshua Zirkzee 6
United strangely tried to lob the ball to him rather than play to his feet, where he is clearly stronger. Made an excellent run into the Newcastle half before pulling his hamstring, capping off a disappointing day for him and United, with this injury coming at a time when he was picking up form and becoming a fan favourite.
Substitutions
Patrick Dorgu 5
Aside from a couple of runs forward, he struggled to get into the game and was sometimes beaten, forcing him to bring his opposition player down.
Mason Mount 5
Huffed and puffed yet again, and had a shot that stung Nick Pope's palms.
Rasmus Hojlund 6
Came on and linked up pretty well with the other United players, making a number of good touches. He did not offer much of a threat, but he had the beating of Fabian Schar on many occasions.
Luke Shaw 5
First appearance in a long time, and did not have that much to do when he came on, with the game already done and dusted.
Kobbie Mainoo 5
Came on very late for some more minutes in the tank.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 6
Rotated the team ahead of Thursday's big game, knowing that this was more of a checkbox match rather than one United will need to win. United tried to work their way through the Newcastle midfield, and at times succeeded. He will have to do a lot of thinking to get the gameplan right for Thursday though, as many of the players on the pitch today did not make a good account of themselves.
