Manchester United sealed a place in the UEFA Europa League Semi-Finals after a dramatic and thrilling 5-4 win over Lyon on Thursday, with three goals in the final six minutes of extra-time.
United went in front very early on thanks to an opener from Manuel Ugarte, who made no mistake from close range after being set up by Alejandro Garnacho.
Bruno Fernandes was close to make it 2-0 after connecting beautifully with a pass from Diogo Dalot, yet his effort cannoned off the bar. Right before the break, Dalot doubled United's lead as he outmuscled Nicolas Tagliafico, before firing it into the net.
United were calm and assured at that point, yet after half-time, Lyon came to life. Corentin Tolisso got a goal back for Lyon, before the visitors quickly made it 2-2 with just 10 minutes left to play.
Tolisso was sent off, as the match went to extra-time. The team with 10 men managed to go in front in the first-half of extra-time after Rayan Cherki carved the United defence open, before Alexandre Lacazette finished off a penalty to make it 4-2.
Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot only minutes later, making it 4-3, before Kobbie Mainoo hit a beautiful strike that nestled into the net to draw United level in the 120th minute.
Immediately after, United went in front, as Harry Maguire, who was being deployed as a striker, got on the end of a cross to head United home and into the Semi-Finals.
Here are our player ratings from a dramatic night at Old Trafford:
Andre Onana 7
All eyes were on him tonight after returning to the starting 11. He made a number of key saves to deny Lyon, but the United defenders often did not help him out. Celebrated in mad fashion once the winner went in, and he was right to do so.
Noussair Mazraoui 6
He was calm and consistent at the back, but was hooked off at half-time for Luke Shaw.
Harry Maguire 7
He made a series of crucial blocks and interventions during the game, before finding Dalot for the goal to make it 2-0. However, he was slow to react at times, and it almost came at a cost for United. Despite all of that, he came up with the winning moment, heading United through to the next round with a brilliant finish.
Leny Yoro 5
Had an up and down game. Made a number of great runs and looked very lively in the first-half, but was found wanting for Tolisso's goal and Tagliafico's equaliser.
Diogo Dalot 7
Set up Fernandes with an excellent pass, before scoring a wonderful goal to put United 2-0 up at the break. He was very adventurous throughout the game and United constantly looked for him in space.
Manuel Ugarte 7
Lively as ever, and took his goal very well. Constantly looked to win the ball and pushed United forward with the high press. Struggled as Lyon got back in the game.
Casemiro 8
United's best player on the day. Seemed to win practically every challenge and constantly knew when to slow the game down and when to pick up the pace again. Won the penalty that inspired the fightback.
Patrick Dorgu 6
Linked up with Garnacho much more than usual, and looked like his enterprising self again. Hit a good cross for Hojlund but the Dane could not connect. Found wanting for the Lyon equaliser.
Bruno Fernandes 7
Influential yet again. He was virtually everywhere on the pitch and had an impact on most of United's play. Hit the crossbar, and had a vital role in the Ugarte goal. Scored from the spot to inspire the comeback.
Alejandro Garnacho 6
Another performance of many highs and lows for Garnacho. Did excellently to set up Ugarte for his goal and was a constant threat to the Lyon backline. However, he almost cost United after missing a golden opportunity to put the Reds 3-0 up.
Rasmus Hojlund 7
Did practically everything right today aside from scoring. Linked up very well with the rest of the team and held the ball excellently. Had a couple of moments where he could have been set free, and on other occasions he could have done better with his runs.
Substitutions
Luke Shaw 4
Clearly off the pace and struggled to get suited to the game's intense pace. Gave away a needless penalty.
Mason Mount 6
Brought on to give United more energy, and he pressed quite well. Did not get much of the ball, but put himself about very well.
Kobbie Mainoo 8
Replaced Hojlund up front yet again, and he scored a beautiful goal to put United level.
Christian Eriksen 5
Did not have much of an impact, but calmed the game down for United.
Harry Amass 6
Came on in extra-time and did not look out of sorts whatsoever. Kept his composure and helped United mount attack after attack.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 6
Got the team selection spot on, and United clearly played much better than they have done all season in the first-half. His substitutions were shaky and very bold, and while some worked, like Mainoo's one, there were others who struggled, like Shaw.
United will now face Athletic Club in the Europa League, as Amorim's side look to book a place in the Final.
