Manchester United won it late on against Rangers on Thursday to climb up to fourth in the UEFA Europa League, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the vital goal in stoppage time.
The first-half was a rather drab affair, with both sides having their fair share of chances, yet the pace of the game was rather slow. The home side thought they had gone ahead through Matthijs de Ligt, but his header from a corner was bizarrely ruled out due to a very soft foul in the penalty area.
After the break, United came out firing, and they eventually got the opener in the 52nd minute after a corner was punched into the net by former United goalkeeper Jack Butland, putting United ahead.
United slowed down the pace following the goal, and Rangers were growing into the match. The Scottish side thought they had got themselves a point after Cyriel Dessers scored with a delightful finish in the 89th minute, yet Fernandes popped up with a goal two minutes into stoppage time, latching on to a brilliant cross from Lisandro Martinez to make it 2-1.
Here are the player ratings from tonight:
Altay Bayindir 7
Made his first start in Europe for United, and he was quite reliable when called up, rushing out to make a number of vital saves. He had no chance of saving the Rangers goal, yet he should come away from the game with head held high and in with a shout of starting against Fulham.
Leny Yoro 6
He was penalised for a foul on the Rangers defenders for the goal that was ruled out. Otherwise, he was relatively comfortable and efficient with his passing. Substituted for Tyrell Malacia.
Matthijs de Ligt 6
Solid throughout the whole match, winning plenty of duels and looking comfortable on the ball. Unfortunate to have his goal disallowed. Substituted at half-time for Harry Maguire after suffering a knock.
Lisandro Martinez 7
Dealt with most of the Rangers threat down his side and was his usual, aggressive self. Swung in a delightful ball for Fernandes for the winner.
Amad Diallo 7
A constant threat down the right, constantly looking to take his marker on. He could not get on the scoresheet, but was pinning the defenders back and was a constant out-ball for United.
Toby Collyer 6
He was rather nervous at the start of the match, making his first start in European football. However, while he lost the ball a couple of times early on, he grew into the match and calmed down. Could be a useful player for Amorim for the rest of the season. Substituted for Manuel Ugarte.
Christian Eriksen 7
Efficient on the ball and was so tidy with his passing. Whenever he plays with a mobile midfielder, he is such a great asset to the team. His eye for a pass is unmatched and Eriksen is one of the few players who is capable of taking a good set-piece, as was seen by the corner that was palmed into the net by Butland. Hooked off for Kobbie Mainoo.
Diogo Dalot 6
Dug deep and was constantly looking to link play between the defence and the attack. However, he did not have much of an influence going forward and focused more on defending. Went into the back three in the closing stages.
Bruno Fernandes 8
Calm and composed throughout the whole match. Started as one of the attacking midfielders, but then dropped into midfield to allow Eriksen to drift further up the pitch. He was constantly influential and looked a class above the rest. Got the vital winner with a tidy finish in stoppage time.
Alejandro Garnacho 8
Produced arguably his best display under Ruben Amorim, showing his worth to the United squad. Constantly looked to beat his man and was uncharacteristically very efficient with the ball. Worked the tight spaces well and did not just look to run into the wings, linking up well on the inside as well. Really need him to stay.
Joshua Zirkzee 6
Worked tirelessly to have an impact on the game, linking up well with the other forwards. However, he was not much of a goal threat and was shut down by the Rangers defence. Unclear whether he will start on Sunday over Rasmus Hojlund, who he was replaced by late in the game.
Substitutions
Harry Maguire 4
Squandered a massive chance from an Eriksen cross, and was at fault for the Rangers goal after being outmuscled and misjudging the flight of the ball.
Tyrell Malacia 5
Came on at left wing-back and was solid defensively, yet rather loose on the ball.
Manuel Ugarte 5
Combative like always, but not the best on the ball. Gave away possession on some occasions.
Kobbie Mainoo 6
Injected a touch of class on the ball and made a claim to start on Sunday.
Rasmus Hojlund 5
Came on very late and barely had a kick.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 7
Made a number of big decisions such as starting Collyer and Eriksen in midfield, while also giving Garnacho, who is being linked with a move, a start. They paid off at the end, as those players that came into the team looked solid throughout.
Results in Europe have been good, but Amorim badly needs the results to be replicated in the Premier League, starting from Sunday against Fulham.
