Manchester United's Emirates FA Cup defence ended on Sunday after losing to Fulham on penalties at Old Trafford.

The first-half was very dull, with neither side looking like they could get a goal. That was until the first minute of stoppage time, as right on the stroke of half-time, Fulham opened the scoring from a corner, after the ball fell to Calvin Bassey, who headed it past Andre Onana.

The second-half started as the first did, with a rather slow rhythm and both sides exchanging possession. However, United got their equaliser in the 71st minute, after Diogo Dalot fired in a perfect ball to Bruno Fernandes, who stroked the ball into the net with his left foot to make it 1-1.

Both sides pushed in search of a winner, but a combination of disappointing finishing from United, as well as some brilliant saves from Onana, kept the score 1-1 after 90 minutes. Extra-time flew by, with neither side getting the decisive goal, as the game went to penalties.

In the penalty shoot-out, Victor Lindelof had his effort saved by Bernd Leno, before Joshua Zirkzee also failed to convert his opportunity, and Fulham won 4-3.

As a result, United have crashed out of the FA Cup in the Fifth Round, with Ruben Amorim's Reds now having only the UEFA Europa League and Premier League to play.

Here are our player ratings from this evening:

Andre Onana 7

He made a mess of a cross in the early stages, but he improved as the game wore on. He was not helped by his defenders for the Fulham goal, and made a number of solid saves in the second-half. Had no chance with the Fulham penalties.

Matthijs de Ligt 8

De Ligt had a complete game from back to front, making a series of crucial tackles and interceptions, while also making good runs forward and spraying passes across the pitch.

Harry Maguire 6

The English defender had a relatively quiet game, making a crucial intervention to stop Rodrigo Muniz at one point, but probably should have marked a more threatening player for the Fulham goal.

Leny Yoro 5

Struggled to keep tabs on Bassey's run for the Fulham goal. Looked solid during the rest of the match, yet was surprisingly hooked off in the 54th minute.

Noussair Mazraoui 7

Found it difficult to react to Bassey's movement, yet aside from that he was flawless, all while fasting during Ramadan. Linked up very well with the rest of the team and defended bravely.

Manuel Ugarte 5

Did not seem fully at it on Sunday, and he struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Not his usual self.

Bruno Fernandes 7

United's main source of creativity yet again. Covered plenty of ground throughout the game and provided that touch of quality to slot in the equaliser with his left foot. Whenever his teammates do not turn up, he always seems to produce an excellent performance.

Diogo Dalot 7

Looked more adventurous going forward than usual, and was a constant threat primarily thanks to De Ligt's crossfield passes. Provided the assist for United's goal.

Christian Eriksen 5

Did not have much of an influence on the game, aside from a cross to Rasmus Hojlund that his Danish teammate failed to convert. Subbed off for Casemiro.

Joshua Zirkzee 6

A mixed game from the Dutchman. While he provided some quality touches and made a number of great strides forward, he was also sluggish at times and on some occasions his touch let him down. Had his penalty saved.

Rasmus Hojlund 4

Struggled yet again. He started very well as he looked to get the better of the opposing defenders, even having an opportunity very early on. However, he quickly vanished from action and was anonymous yet again. He was subbed off for Chido Obi, who is making a claim to start ahead of Hojlund.

Substitutions

Alejandro Garnacho 6

Another game from off the bench, and another game without a goal for Garnacho. He lifted the crowd with his runs and marauding attacks, but he once again failed to convert the chances that he created.

Victor Lindelof 4

A rather strange substitution, and he struggled to get up to the pace of the game. Failed to convert his penalty.

Chido Obi 6

His introduction livened up the crowd, with many eager to see him play. He is quickly making himself more of an option to start, with Hojlund and Zirkzee both in horrendous goalscoring form. Had two big chances in stoppage time, and was denied by Leno in extra-time. Could have done better with those opportunities, but at least he is getting chances.

Casemiro 6

Provided that touch of experience that was badly needed in the closing stages. His long passes were proving to be a threat as United looked for quick breaks on the counter.

Ayden Heaven 7

Came on at the start of extra-time to make his United debut, and he looked comfortable both with and without the ball. Could be a regular in the team over the coming weeks.

Manager - Ruben Amorim: 6

Started the game with too much of a slow team, with United lacking any real pace going forward. The decision to introduce Obi and Garnacho made a real difference, with United looking more creative.

However, United have ultimately exited out of another competition, with the remaining few weeks of the season leaving Amorim practically fully focused on winning the Europa League, while also hoping United can have a rather more respectable end to the league campaign.
